Chair of the Trust and crew
win Great River Race

Our Chair of the Trust Stewart Taylor (second from left) along with Jeff Nike, Anthony Peck and Graham Biner of the Lower Thames Rowing Club decided last year to try to take part in The Great River Race – a 21 mile race from Poplar to Ham House Richmond. There were 314 boats from around the world competing this year.

Stewart said:

“We bought a Salter Skiff of eBay in April for £140.00 it was in a dilapidated state and we spent the rest of this year mending it and getting it ready for the race.

The race is run on Handicap so the slowest boat starts first, the fastest boat had a handicap of 67 minutes this was a £35,000 pound boat with 12 people rowing. Our boat had a handicap of 13 minutes we were the 8th boat to start.

We finished the race in 2.55.14 we were first over the line, 2nd place was 20 seconds behind us. The 5 classes we won were 1st Thames Skiff, 1st Thames Based Boat, 1st Four Oared Boat, 1st over 40 Veterans, Overall Winner of the Great Race making us the UK Traditional Boat Champions.

We are over the moon to win, we have trained all year for this race and to do so well and bring the Trophies and Title back to Leigh on Sea is a great thing”

Congratulations to Laindon Park

Laindon Park Primary School and Nursery is happy to announce that the recently released national figures show the SAT results for the school were 22% above the national average.

Mrs Portoles, Headteacher at the school, said

‘Whilst we thought that last year’s results were outstanding, putting the school 17% above the national data, this year our pupils have not only maintained those exceptional results but exceeded them.  Our results this year for combined Writing, Reading and Maths are 87% compared to a national of 65%. These superb results reflect the children’s hard work, fantastic attitudes and resilience, outstanding teaching and of course, the unfaltering support of parents throughout the children’s time at the school’.
