King John Supports HARP,
Southend’s Homeless Charity

Year 7 and Year 8 tutor groups this year amassed a huge collection for the annual HARP harvest appeal.  Ms Carter, languages co-ordinator said ‘I’m very proud of all the students who took the time to support a local charity that can make a difference to the lives of others in our community’.

Mrs McGauley, Headteacher at King John, said: ‘We’re very keen to support local charities like HARP and I’d like to say thank you to all our students and parents for supporting this cause.’

Screenwriter visits
King John School and Sixth Form

Successful director and screenwriter Richard Kurti (who has worked with Film Studios Universal and Miramax amongst others) visited GCSE and A Level Film and Media students on to talk about pathways into the industry as well as support students with their coursework.  Richard has written episodes of Primeval, Wolfblood and Sinbad, along with adapting work for both screen and radio.

Mr Kurti said:

‘I never had a film education, so to know that these students are learning about the art of cinema – and the opportunities the school provides for them – is fantastic. I have thoroughly enjoyed being here today.’

King John’s former Headteacher Awarded CBE in the New Year’s Honours List

Dr Margaret Wilson, who was appointed as headteacher at Benfleet’s King John School in 2000, is now chief executive officer for the Trust is celebrating after receiving the accolade. The CBE is an honour awarded to an individual by the Queen for their leading role at a regional level or a prominent, but lesser role, at a national level in any activity.

Dr Wilson said “I am not someone who normally gets emotional but I felt really humbled when I opened the letter. I am totally delighted to be awarded such an accolade and just didn’t expect it at all”.

King John Thought Tree

During their tutor time Class 8-09 with their tutor Miss Szymiec have discussed Thanksgiving and used the opportunity to write and thank those teachers and individuals who have helped or inspired them. With help from Miss Sykes their thank you notes are now on display on the Thought tree in the LRC.

New Head at King John

In November 2018 Mrs McGauley was appointed as the substantive Headteacher at The King John School, with effect from January 2019.

Since December 2017 Mrs McGauley became Head of School and has been managing the day to day running of the school.

Dr Wilson was appointed to the post of Headteacher in 2000 and she has loved every minute of being Headteacher but is now looking forward to focusing on her role as CEO of ZMAT, supporting the schools in the Trust.  She will be working very closely with Mrs McGauley to ensure that King John remains an outstanding school and continues to provide a quality educational experience for all students and staff.

Harp Appeal to Help the Homeless

Year 7 and 8 tutor groups came together again this year to support the Southend-based homeless charity with its Harvest appeal.  HARP representatives Kufa and Jason were really grateful for the donations they received from all tutor groups.  Students pictured are, from left to right, Logan, Michael and Jo of 7.08, who were there to hand over the many food trays that had been put together with long-life items to help provide hot meals for the next year.  Well done and thank you to all who contributed to the appeal!
